Good ole PNW weather!

Planning outfits for family photos can feel like the hardest part of preparing for a session — especially here in the Pacific Northwest where the weather can change quickly.
The good news is that with a little planning, you can choose outfits that photograph beautifully while also staying comfortable in whatever the PNW decides to give us that day.
Here are a few simple tips I share with families before their sessions.

1. Start with Neutrals and Soft Colors

Neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully in outdoor sessions because they don’t compete with the natural environment.
Think soft earth tones like:
• cream
• sage
• tan
• dusty blue
• warm browns
These colors complement the natural scenery we see around Snohomish, Tacoma, and the greater Seattle area.

2. Coordinate — Don’t Match!

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, aim for outfits that complement each other.
A simple approach is to choose two or three main colors and mix them throughout the family’s outfits.
This keeps the photos feeling cohesive while still allowing everyone’s personality to come through.
3. Layers Work Perfectly for PNW Weather
The Pacific Northwest is known for unpredictable weather, but layers actually photograph beautifully.
Adding pieces like:
• sweaters
• light jackets
• cardigans
• scarves
creates visual depth in photos and helps everyone stay comfortable if the temperature changes.

4. Always Plan for a Backup Spot

One of the things I always help families with is having a backup location in mind if the weather turns unexpectedly.
Covered walkways, tree-lined areas, or even nearby indoor spaces can make it easy to continue the session without stress.

5. Focus on Comfort

The best photos happen when everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.
Choosing outfits that allow movement — especially for kids — helps create natural moments instead of stiff poses.
Sweet and delirious joy of the first month of parenthood

Preparing for Your Session

My goal during every session is to make the experience feel relaxed and enjoyable, not stressful.
Before each session, I help families with location ideas, outfit guidance, and timing so everything feels easy when the day arrives.
