Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t planned.
They just… happen.

I was standing on the Chihuly Bridge of Glass in Tacoma, taking a few test shots while waiting for my next session to arrive. It was one of those in-between moments — camera in hand, just observing the space, the light, the way everything was coming together.
And then I saw them.
A family walking toward me under the bridge — a mom, a dad, and their little girl sitting on her dad’s shoulders. She was laughing, giggling, completely in her own world as they pointed up at the glass ceiling, taking in all the colors and shapes above them.
It was one of those moments you don’t plan, you don’t pose — you just feel it.
The kind of moment that passes quickly, but means everything.

The mom had her phone out, trying to snap a few photos of her daughter. You could tell she didn’t want to miss it, but also wanted to be in it — that balance every parent knows.
And I just had this thought:
They deserve to have this moment, not just remember it.
So I walked up and asked if she wanted me to take a photo for them.
At first, she thought I meant on her phone — which, honestly, fair. That’s usually how those interactions go.
But I told her I’m a photographer, and if she was open to it, I’d love to capture a few images for them and send them over.
No pressure. No catch. Just… because.
What followed was a few minutes of the most genuine, joy-filled interaction. No posing. No expectations.
Just them — exactly as they were.
Her laughter, the way they looked at her, the way they looked at each other… it all unfolded so naturally.
Later, after I sent over their gallery, she messaged me and told me something I didn’t know in that moment: It was her birthday. They were out celebrating together as a family.
And that’s when it really hit me. Out of all the days… Out of all the timing… That small decision to walk up and offer to take a photo became part of a memory they’ll get to keep forever.
This is why I do what I do. Not for perfectly posed images. Not for everything to go exactly as planned. But for moments like this — the ones that are already happening, whether a camera is there or not.
Because the truth is… You don’t need a perfectly planned session or the “right” conditions or everything to go smoothly to have something meaningful captured. Sometimes, the most important memories are the ones you never saw coming.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a session but feel like life is too busy, too chaotic, or not “perfect” enough…those are usually the moments worth documenting the most.
